Parking at Formby Beach

The one thing to do before you leave home

Download the National Trust app and set up an account. Mobile signal on Victoria Road near the car park is poor to non-existent. If you arrive without the app already installed, you can't book your parking slot. You then either wait for your signal to work (good luck with that) or leave. Sort it at home.

1. Download the app

Search 'National Trust' in the App Store or Google Play. Free to download. Create an account if you don't have one.

🅿️

2. Book your slot

Search for 'Formby' in the app. Select the date and time, confirm parking. You'll get a booking reference to show if asked.

🚗

3. Arrive and park

The barrier is managed by the NT. Have your booking reference ready. Non-members pay via the app: not at a machine on site.

When It Fills Up

Peak: Summer Weekends

Book in advance

Arrives at capacity by 10–10:30am on sunny summer Saturdays and Sundays. Arrive before 9am or pre-book. Seriously.

Peak: School Holidays

Book in advance

Half term and summer holidays: any day can be busy, not just weekends. Pre-booking strongly recommended throughout July and August.

Moderate: Bank Holidays

Arrive early

Fills up on bank holidays and sunny Easter weekends. Same advice: aim early or book ahead.

Quiet: Weekdays (not school holidays)

Usually fine

Tuesday or Wednesday morning off-season? You'll be fine. Plenty of space and you can often pay on the day via the app.

If the Car Park is Full

If you arrive and the car park is full, you're not getting in. The options are:

  • Street parking on Victoria Road: limited, fills early on busy days. Walk from the road to the beach is about 20 minutes on the path.
  • Formby station car park: paid parking, then 20-minute walk west along Victoria Road. Fine for off-peak visits.
  • Train to Formby station: park elsewhere and take the train. 20-minute walk from the station to the beach. Decent option for families who don't mind a walk.
  • Ainsdale Beach car park: 3 miles north in Southport, larger car park, often less busy. Different vibe but the same Sefton Coast sand.
